It is interesting that his AIF enlistment mentions wife Alice, interned in Germany. I doubt this is the same Alice that he had divorced a few years prior, so this means that he may well have married up to six times throughout his life. I would love to find a marriage or death certificate from Tasmania, however it seems that newspaper announcements are about as good as it gets. Oh well, I will have to hunt down more children in Tasmania now.

Thanks a lot everyone!

Charles then went on to marry Alice Jane Clotz in 1905. Newspaper articles indicate that their marriage was awful, with Charles neglecting Alice and suggesting that she should prostitute herself in order to make more money while he was out of work. They were divorced by the courts in 1916, though by that time Charles's whereabouts were not known.

Well, it is possible that at the time of this enlistment he did not know he was divorced!

It is also possible there were rumours of the CLOTZ family being interned in an Australian Centre . (Not in Germany)

Well, the newspaper mentions that when Alice Clotz divorced him, his whereabouts were unknown. He states on his marriage to Elspeth that Alice had died in 1916. I should add that Charles treated Alice horribly.

This lengthy news item confirms Charles is in Tasmania from at least 1908 when he takes up a cricket coaching position .  Perhaps you already have the item. Not  sure.

It gives a good account of his movements in Australia, though no mention of wives.

It is possible he has exaggerated his CV  ::)
Interesting reading

Couldn't find the engagement notice in the 6/12/38 paper. Did you type the wrong page/date or do I need to look harder?  :)
