from UK to South Africa 1881-1888
« on: Saturday 11 July 20 11:20 BST (UK) »
hi,
I know Amy Harrison was born in England about 1869/70.
She was married in Burgersdorp 6th April 1888 to Thomas Reid.
Her parents were James and Jane and they were by now settled in South Africa.
I am trying to find them on passenger lists to get more information about the family.

  thanks for any help............bigjon

Reid, Brown, Harrison, Saunders, Coetzer........South Africa and Scotland.

There are no (or very few) passenger lists from the UK prior to 1890.
The Board of Trade at the time didn't think it necessary to keep them! ::)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Here are the notice of marriage details (click forward from this image)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9BB-1959?i=1178&cat=198123
 - Amy was resident 12 months
 - Notice was given on the 5th and marriage license signed on the 6th.
 - Amy is listed as the step-daughter of George Sturgess
 - George gave permission for the marriage.

One of the witnesses at the marriage looks to be "George Sturgiss". Comparing his signature, particularly the Gs and the T, at Amy's marriage to this 1876 marriage between a George Sturgiss and a Maria Elizabeth Harrison.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:W8RH-3N3Z
 - this may be Maria Elizabeth, dies as Elizabeth Harrison Sturgess, born 1847 England. Towards the bottom it states she had three children total.  She died in 1923, married.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:WHQS-8X3Z
 - George died in 1927, a widower (same address).

Maria Elizabeth is mentioned as a spinster at marriage, which means possibly that Amy was her illegitimate daughter.
