Considering how the informant's dialect may have picked up and transcribed  , could it be that McAvetty might be McCafferty ?

Yes you are probably right....... unfortunately.

McCafferty is a much more known Irish spelling than McAvetty and therefore more likely to be useful to track ancestors.  Though it is a good idea to keep a list of different spellings of the names and search under all as surnames were not fixed, accents played a part etc.

Norfolk, Nelsons of Gt Ryburgh, Gooch, Howman, COLLISONS,  Ainger, Couzens, Batrick (Norfolk & Dorset), Tubby ( also of Yorkshire) Cathcarts of Ireland, Lancashire & Isle of Wight) Dickinsons of Morecambe and Lancaster, Wilson of Poulton-le-Sands and Broughton.  Wilson - Ffrance of Rawcliffe,  Mitchells of Isle of Wight. Hair of Ayrshire, Williamson of Tradeston, Glasgow. Nelsons in Australia with Haywards Heath connections.
