I wonder if he went to Canada?

There is a travel record on FindMyPast for a Cliford Oliver born 1898 sailing to Quebec, Canada on 29th April 1929, ship was Alaunia.  Occupation unclear a something maker?

Address is equally difficult to make out - it looks like 5 Nottingham Road, South Croydon.

I agree 5 Nottingham Rd, South Croydon - occ looks like Timber Dealer

ADDED Douglas William Oliver is at that address in 1915 - he was a Hardwood merchant on earlier census

There is no indication in 1939 against Cliffords name as to whether he is single /married etc

there is what looks like an 'M' by both Clifford Oliver and Violet Olivers names - I assumed this meant they were married ??

you're right - nothing alongside Cliffords name !
I think that you need to look at Cliffords entry again

One Clifford Oliver sailed from U K to Quebec on 29 April 1929 on The Alaunia.

I am searching for Clifford Oliver born Rotherham 2 or 3 May 1898 but no sighting in the UK after 1927 - wonder if 'my' Clifford Oliver is the one who went to Canada.

Any help much appreciated - thanks.

If you look at your other thread on Clifford Oliver you will see that the one who went to Canada in 1929 has been discussed (eliminated ?).

Was there an occupation given on the passenger list?

There is one coming back from Quebec to London on 28 Sep 1931 who was a salesman age 33.

Ship Aurania.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

That 'Clifford' would appear to be Douglas Clifford Oliver born Epsom reg district in 1898 -mmn Tressider - son of Douglas William Oliver and Hilda Alice Tressider who married in Croydon in 1896
