Two surnames
« on: Sunday 19 July 20 13:19 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Why would the surname on a birth certificate in 1852 (the same surname for the child and her parents) be different on a baptism record just a few months later?  The names are totally different so not a spelling error.  It seems the family swapped between both names throughout their lives according to the various censuses that followed.  What would be the reason for this?

Birth
19 March 1852 Caroline Hudson, Father Willam Hudson, Mother Caroline formerly Phillips, Profession Jappaner,  32 Ironmonger Street St Lukes.
Baptism
Hackney St James Shoreditch
Caroline dob 19 March 1852 , parents William and Caroline Burley, 5 Vincent Street, St Lukes, Profession Jappaner.

You really need to type it out as not everyone that tries to help has access to Ancestry

I haven't been able to find a marriage certificate for the parents.

On the 1871 census they appear as Murley instead of Burley with two additional children, William born 1856 St Luke (missing on the 61 census) and Alfred born 1864 in Clerkenwell.
