Interesting article from the Guardian/Observer today about objects donated/acquired by the Science Museum in London which they've got no idea about.....

The second one does, Erato

Apologies, I've been using the other URL shortening method for something else, and forgot to use the Rootschat one - now added

Do they really not know what a treadle operated fret saw is? Fretwork was popular up until the 1940s and you could by the saws for some years after that.

Would it be cynical of me to link that news story to the start of the school holidays and the ability to book tickets for their reopening on 19th August?   :-X

I used a virtually identical model (if not the same model) of that fretsaw in anger as a young hobbyist - it belonged to a neighbour who lent it to us for a while.  Great fun making jigsaws with pictures glued on to hardboard. The original drivebelt had been lost and the replacement length of string didn't have the right level of grip on the large drive wheel, so to start it going you had to give the upper pulley a spin until the string started to grip. Otherwise you just sat there treddling with nothing else happening.  :)
