Edward Harris(s) c.1754 Takeley?
« on: Monday 20 July 20 16:00 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

Edward Harris was my 5xgt Grandfather. I know that he married Mary Rumbold in Takeley in 1779 and believe he died there in 1834. The burial record gives an estimated birth date of 1754.

I am yet to find a baptism for Edward and it would be lovely to get further back with this line.

If anyone could help, it'd be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Emma

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your reply. Edward is proving to be a troublesome one! I'm not sure on either of those records, as I'd have thought he'd have been more local to Takeley.

Some more digging required, me thinks!

Thanks again,
Emma

A few observations
Harrises are a bit thin on the ground in Takeley. The only family I can find is Edward, Mary and their children.
There is a gap in the register of Takeley from March 1744 to 1752/3. A note has been made by the curate William Nicholson when he resumed recording them, stating that the then vicar was John Pinsent. Presumably to ensure he wasn't blamed.
Edward outlived Mary, so presumably the information given to the vicar for burial record was from one of his children. Might not know it so accurately as a wife would and said about 80 - nice round number and very old for the time. So maybe 1754 dob should be widened a bit.
They were married in 1779, but no child baptised in Takeley until 1783, is there another child baptised aroun 1780 in a neighbouring village which would give a clue to where Edward was from?

Thanks for spending time looking at this. It all makes sense...Edward will be my next focus. Any possibilities for him are still very welcome!
