William Williamson
« on: Thursday 23 July 20 17:09 BST (UK) »
William Williamson died on the 12th November 1881 aged 70 suggesting he was born around 1811.
His wife Jane Williamson died on the 26th March 1887 aged 78 suggesting she was born around 1809. They had a daughter, Jane, who died in 1921 aged 77 suggesting she was born around 1844/ 1845 which suggests they got married in 1844.
The Irish Genealogical website provided details for two Williamson weddings in 1845/46 but in both cases the couples ages shown do not correspond with the birth dates suggested by their respective Death Certificates.
The Williamson/Massey wedding in Newry, Co Down was interesting as I had received correspondence from a lady in Australia who has a match with my DNA. She has Williamsons in her family who came from Kettering in Northamptonshire in GB prior to 1850.
On the 1845 Marriage Cert. for Williamson/Massey William is listed as a Shoemaker and we know that Kettering was famous for shoes in the past. Furthermore, the Marriage Cert. has no information relating to either parties Fathers name or profession so I was speculating that some of the Williamson family emigrated to Australia, willingly or otherwise, while William headed across to Ireland, possibly with Jane Massey in tow!
This all makes a kind of sense apart from the Birth Date discrepancies unless the ages shown on the Marriage Certificate are wrong.
Any help greatly appreciated as ever!

I can't see that the daughter's estimated years of birth give any firm indication of when her parents married- unless you know for certain that she was their eldest child?

Religion? civil registration of non-Catholic marriages in Ireland started 1845 so if they did married in Ireland before that date it may be very difficult/impossible to find a record of the marriage unless you can find a church record to confirm.
Since Williamson is such a common surname and the Christian names are even more common then there might be far more than 2 William Williamsons with wife Jane.

If you do find information it is helpful to post links so we can try to assist rather than us having to search for the same detail you've mentioned.

William Williamson m.(1845) Jane Massey-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1845/09297/5365792.pdf
Note: shoemakers were found all over Ireland and the rest of the British Isles so William's occupation doesn't really point to a possible link to shoemaking in Kettering.

Can't see another William Williamson marriage to a Jane in 1840s anywhere in Ireland.

William Williamson born c1811, according to his death, & died 1881 Greencastle, Antrim (married & informant is Jane Williamson), occupation flax buyer-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1881/06424/4845653.pdf

Jane Williamson died 1887 at 13 Frederick St., Belfast, widow of William Williamson, grocer- informant was son-in-law William Davis-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1887/06227/4782041.pdf
I can't, at the moment, see any connection between William the shoemaker (married 1845), William the flax buyer (died 1881) and William the grocer (widow Jane died 1887).

Marriage of Jane Williamson to William Davis gives her age as 22 in 1867- but father William as a tailor-

The Will of William Williamson late of Greencastle County Antrim Spirit Dealer deceased who died 12 November 1881 at same place was proved at Belfast by Jane Williamson Widow and the Reverend Patrick Ryan P.P. both of Greencastle the Executors. Will dated 9 Jan.1879 mentions wife Jane, Patrick Ryan P.P., children- Edward, Lucy, Jane, Robert, Matthew & Thomas.

Daughter Lucy married 1882 age 17 (born c1865) in a Catholic Church (not surprising since father appointed the Parish Priest as an executor)-

Hi aghadowey, sorry about the missing links below. I didn't realise I'd missed these when I copied my query from Word!
William Williamson Death Notice – died in Belfast No. 7 District
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1881/06424/4845653.pdf
Jane Williamson Death Notice – died in Belfast No. 2 District
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1887/06227/4782041.pdf

Although I don't know what religion the original folk were our family are Protestant so I take your point about the pre 1845 Registrations.

Their daughter, also called Jane, married William Davis on the 22nd May 1867 and she is aged 22 so that led me to believe she was born around 1845.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1867/11494/8225657.pdf

Jane Williamson at 13 Frederick Street is our Jane Wiliamson as I know some of my ancestors have that connection. It's possible the William who died in 1881 (Flax Buyer) has no family connection and I'm not aware of any Roman Catholic connections in the family history.
The only pointer to the Shoemaker Williamson is the DNA link from the Williamson in Australia and I know that's pretty tenuous at best.

I see the Lucy link but I'm not aware of any family connections with Whitehouse so I think it's unlikely.

Anyway, many thanks for your help as always.

Son Matthew born 1871-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1871/03277/2200941.pdf
Quite possible children are listed in father's Will in birth order. In any case, it's unlikely that a woman born c1809 was giving birth to a child in 1871.

Greencastle R.C. registers are online. Matthew's baptism on this page (entry #1001)-
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632272#page/68/mode/1up

Edward Alexander Williamson bapt. 1863- Margaret Williamson one of the sponsors-
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632272#page/37/mode/1up

A son James bapt.1862- Mary Williamson one of the sponsors-
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632272#page/32/mode/1up

Scrolled back to 1857 baptisms and didn't spot any older children.

The William Williamson, flax buyer of Greencastle, and wife Jane Taylor baptised their children as Catholics so were likely married in a Catholic ceremony pre-1864 (when registration of Catholic marriages began).

So, Jane Williamson who married William Davis is the family you are looking for? mother Jane Williamson died 1887 but husband William Williamson could have died before start of death registration (1864). Will see if I can find any more clues.
