Which Church?
« on: Wednesday 29 July 20 15:09 BST (UK) »
I am back to Richard Donkin c1771 in one of my trees.  He married Dorothy Goodfellow at Stannington, and in the record it states that he is a native of Byker.  Does anyone know which church I should be looking at to find out if he was actually born there.  I am at a total loss as to where to look.

I'd try Newcastle upon Tyne All Saints.

As Jennifer says All Saints seems to be the only church that currently has a Richard Donkin baptised in Apr 1771 -
both in Free Reg and on Family Search (in the Bishops Transcripts).

which doesn't necessarily mean its your man, but may be worth looking into

Image is dire but it is the second entry from the top of the second column on that page, so kudos and thanks go to whoever transcribed that for Free Reg.

The original register will be held at Woodhorn and 'may' be easier to read, but I'd doubt there will be any more info in the entry.

Boo.

This copy will

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-67K9-PVD?i=526&cc=2365059
Will of Robert Donkin Gent of Belsay, written in 1771 and proved 1781.

Mentions a son, Robert Donkin of Byker

May not have anything to do with 'your' Donkins, but worth adding to to the possibles collection in case anything else turns up to confirm/deny it.
Sometimes, especially this far back, we need to just keep on poking round for bits and pieces that are 'possibles' until we can, hopefully, get to the stage where we have enough to to make an 'on balance' decision as to whether or not its the correct scenario. That can take a lot of searching and a lot of years, but if you keep good notes of what you find and where you still have a bit of hope that you may crack it.
If it wasn't for that little bit of hope, I'd had given up years ago :-)

Hi Jen B, thanks for that information on where next to search.  I have done that and found him baptised in April 1771.  His father is Robert Donkin, who is down as an Agent.  I shall keep a record of that link, as I never knew about it.  I just have to find out more his father now.

I'd try Newcastle upon Tyne All Saints.

I should have added this link when I said this yesterday  ::)

Look at Parish History section.

This is a useful tool https://www.familysearch.org/mapp/
Enter 'Byker' and it tells you that it was formerly a Chapelry of Newcastle All Saints
