Help needed to identify place name
« on: Sunday 02 August 20 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hello
Can someone please help with a placename for Alexander Leadbetter on the attached.  He was born Innerleithen.  The clip is from an entry in Innerleithen old parish register.

Thanks, Roy

There is a Hulhope on the west side of the Leithen Water in Ainslie's map dated 1821, almost opposite Colquhar on the east side. https://maps.nls.uk/view/216442818

The first edition of the Ordnance Suvery map shows a place called Woolhope on this same spot. See
http://www.geograph.org.uk/browse.php?p=577261

Woolhope is still shown on the current 1:25,000 map. Go to http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/nt3341 and click on the map top enlarge it.

Scotland's Places lists Woolhope, of which it says, "About ⅛ of a Mile South West from Colquhar. A small house one story high and in bad repair, at present unoccupied; the property of John Miller Esqr, Leithen Lodge. This house is called Hulhope on the county map, but the proper name is Woolhope".

So I think your Houlhope is the present-day ruin of Woolhope.

It's also on the map DonM found as Hulhope.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Rosie, Don, Maureen and Forfarian

Thanks for the details, and links; I originally thought it was Houlhope but questioned myself when I couldn't find it on a map.

Kind Regards

I had heard that a "Hope" was originally the highest house up a burn!
