De Maus/ Henderson Marriage

Amazing, I wasn't aware of any of this. It does rather seem that Jane had a difficult life with De Maus who clearly had a ferocious temper. I a!m also very surprised that Jane' s two sisters were present at the time of the assault. I know that one other sister did emigrate to the antipodes but the others remained in Scotland, so had they travelled all this way on a family visit? It should be noted that their father had made the journey to Australia in 1854 to photograph Melbourne so the family were not deterred by long journeys.

You possibly have these details but I searched for them hoping there may have been a clue somewhere about the marriage.

There were five McGlashon (Scottish spelling) sisters one of whom, Barbara definitely lived in New Zealand, the wife of William Sly. One other, Mary Ann, was in south Africa. Elizabeth died in Edinburgh in 1869 while Margaret Seton died in Bonnyrigg, Scotland in 1919. My guess is that two sisters travelled to New Zealand to see their sister Jane; this may have included Barbara and perhaps this is when she met William Sly, her future husband. All conjecture but perhaps ship records remain of which sisters journeyed to New Zealand.

Incidentally I have just found the following biography on the internet which suggests that James De Maus died of poisoning. This story is getting stranger and stranger!

Minniehaha, Thank you very much for all your help in this quest. We had our daughter over for a meal and had a great time going through all of this. My wife certainly has some interesting ancestors!
