Sunderland 1857-61. Phillis Dale names 2 different fathers?

Phiilis Dale

I have the marriage certificate for Phillis Dale to Francis Edwards (my gg grandfather) in 1857 (see https://imgur.com/a/voaucso)

In it, she records her father as Thomas Dale (Coppersmith) and her address as 20 Spring Gardens Sunderland.

However, in 1861, she appears in the Census by her married name Phillis "Edwards" living with her parents at 28 Spring Gardens Sunderland. Her father is listed as a Brazier (similar trade to Coppersmith) but he is now called John.

The locations and names for Phillis all match up, and her name is not common, so i'm certain it's the same person.

I'm perplexed as to the different fathers names though. Any ideas?

Many Thanks

Mark

The Cert is written in the same hand and Phillis/Francis did not sign so were illiterate.
Mistakes happen in these circumstances.
As it was a Register Office Marriage there is no Parish Register entry to compare details.

Trish :)

I see she was Bapt Yorkshire 14 Sep 1834 to John Dale/Jane Shaw.

So it adds up to me just a mistake on the Marriage Cert.

I agree with Trish.

In 1851 Phillis is with her parents John and Jane in Spring Gardens. John is a brazier.
(HO 107/2397/355/29)

Edit They are also in Spring Gardens in 1841.

Mark, the certificate shows 28 Spring Gardens, not 20.

This is why it always helps to have a second pair of eyes haha ::). I can't believe I never spotted that, but you're absolutely right, and that ties everything together for sure.

Thankyou for your comments JenB and Trish, that helps a lot  :)
