Really silly question re Ancestry Civil Marriage records
« on: Monday 10 August 20 13:01 BST (UK) »
When reviewing civil marriage results on Ancestry clicking on a result brings up a new view with details of the selected record (please see attached screen shot of part of the view). There is a section "Records on page" which lists some names - please could someone clarify where these names are taken from - are they from the actual marriage certificate?

They should be the brides and grooms on the same page indexed at the gro.
(Multiple couples- should always be an even number of names.

Arranged in Alphabetical order. Dont infer anything otherwise

From FreeBMD

Marriages Dec 1901
CORLEY          Thomas        Barrow F.    8e   1424
Edmondson    Florence        Barrow F.    8e   1424
HOLLIDAY           Emily        Barrow F    8e   1424
Thompson    Joshua Brumley        Barrow F.    8e   1424

Those other names have nothing to do with the record.

So to clarify,
Ancestry has used 8c as the district.

The majority view is that it is correctly 8e

Bit of info

The country is divided up into Registration Districts. Each district has a name and a volume number which shows in which geographical area it was situated. The names and numbers have changed over the years, the main change taking place in 1851. Up to that time, all districts were identified within an all-figure system originally using roman numerals. As the indexes are replaced with computer generated lists, these are changing to normal numbers. Since 1851, numbers have been suffixed by a letter. The numbers commence with 1 for the London area and increase as the districts fan out around the country. You may find registration district maps located in the place where you are searching. Alternatively use one of the online resources. Certain other changes took place in 1946 and 1974, consolidating many of the register offices, particularly in London and the larger towns when county boundaries changed.

Later on they changed to something like this one from a birth

District   Bristol
District number   3011B
Register Number   B41C
Entry Number   018
Date of registration mm/yy   12/98
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

As others have pointed out, Ancestry have got the reference wrong. 8c is the Chorlton district, and Barrow-in-Furness is 8e, so Florence Edmondson, who I assume is the person of interest, shouldn't be showing here at all.

In this case it's useful that you can consult CumbriaBMD as well as the GRO/FreeBMD index, since that, like other sites in the UKBMD family, shows the correct marriage partner and the exact place of marriage. I recommend taking a look, but should you decide not to, for this marriage it's Thomas Corley and St Luke, Barrow-in-Furness.

You can also order a certificate through that site, and since it will come from a local register office, there's a chance it will have a copy of the original signatures.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thank you for the really helpful replies! I have been trying to find a marriage record for Mabel Florence Edmunds and Howard Albert Smith which I believe took place in 1901 (this date is taken from length of marriage listed on subsequent censuses). My screen shot was just an example of one of the records I had looked at. The only record I could find is for a Albert Smith and a Florence Edmunds which was took place on 24/11/1901 Strand 1b 1112. Most of the information matches the people I am interested in but there are subtle differences so my difficulty is how can I be sure I have the correct marriage?!
