Wills for Southwark, St George the Martyr around 1697
« on: Tuesday 11 August 20 07:11 BST (UK) »
Goddard NEWINGTON was interred 30 May 1697 at Southwark, St George the Martyr.

I feel reasonably confident there will be a Will however I cannot locate it and wondering where I should look for Wills from this time and location please?

I wonder if this is your man ???

There is mention of a will for Goddard NEWINGTON on Sussex pages of British History Online.  He owned land at Southwick.

By his will proved 1698 Goddard Newington left it to his nieces Elizabeth, Mary, and Anne Stedwell.

Hello Bearkat,

I am not sure at all unfortunately.  I currently have the Goddard NEWINGTON whose nieces are Elizabeth, Mary, and Anne STEDWELL as Goddard the son of Samuel NEWINGTON & Hopestill HEPDEN bur 01 Dec 1678 at Southover, Sussex who was aged about 62 at death.

It was when I discovered the Goddard NEWINGTON of Southwark, St George the Martyr who is deceased some twenty years later that I am now unsure if I have the right Goddard NEWINGTON in the right family.

Unfortunately the NEWINGTON line used certain forenames consistently which can be so confusing and challenging to ensure one has the right person in the right family.

I have transcribed the Will proved 1698 and there was nothing that mentioned Southwark although there were many mentions of Southweeke in the said County of Sussex.  Not being a local leaves me very unsure.

Surely 'Southweeke' is an old variation of the name Southwark.

I'd look it up on Wikipedia, but my computer won't load the page.  :-\

Not sure if you've seen my reply from about 10 days ago about 'Southweeke' being an old variation of the 'Southwark', which may prove helpful to you.

Surely your link does not support that Southweeke was a variation of Southwark.

It lists

Southwark in Surrey (no variants mentioned)

Southwick, Southweek, Southweeke and Suthick in Sussex

Southwick, Southick, Southweek, Southweeke and Suthwick in the county of Southampton (now Hampshire)

'Southweeke' being an old variation of the 'Southwark', which may prove helpful to you.

Bearkat was spot on, Southwick. Near Brighton. In Sussex (Southwark was not, and is not in Sussex)

There is mention of a will for Goddard NEWINGTON on Sussex pages of British History Online.  He owned land at Southwick.

By his will proved 1698 Goddard Newington left it to his nieces Elizabeth, Mary, and Anne Stedwell.

The will was proved at Lewes in 1678 and here it is, Stedwell nieces and all

The confusion is that Goddard Newington appears to have had property in Southwick (Sussex)and died in Southwark (Surrey).
