Emily Mortimer
« on: Saturday 15 August 20 14:16 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of Emily Millicent Mitchell who married George Mortimer 27 august 1908 in Hereford, her father is stated as being William James Mitchell. In 1911 census she is living with husband George and daughter Lilian May in Asylum Cottages, Burghill, near Hereford, she states she was born in 1884 in Newport, Monmouth. I cannot find an Emily Millicent Mitchell born in 1884 in Newport, Monmouth but there is Emily Elizabeth Mitchell born 1884 Newport. This Emily seems to be the daughter of William John Mitchell & Elizabeth Hughes, but is this the right person?
Anyone got any thoughts on this please.

It seems the William John Mitchell who married Elizabeth Hughes on the 5th october 1878 was already married, in august of 1879 he was sentenced to 4 months hard labour for bigamy. They did seem to go on and have 3 children William James b1882, Emily Elizabeth b1884 & Amelia Florence b1886, but they surely would have been regarded as illegitimate wouldn't they?

It seems Emily is still in Newport in 1891 according to the census.  Her birth year there is recorded as 1885 and her mother is recorded as being a widow and Head of the Household.

And ten years later in the 1901 census she is living in the same street in Newport with her mother.  Her mother has a different surname as she married again in 1894 and by 1901 is recorded as being a widow.  THe 1901 census records Emily being a dressmaker.

George Mortimer died in 1924, and Emily married William Grady in Hereford in 1927. They are living in  Hereford with Emily's son Royle in 1939 register. Emily Elizabeth Grady died in 1972 aged 87.
