Census or similar records in South Africa 1900 to 1915
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 14:54 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what records I could look at for people in living in south Africa from 1900 to 1915

I have records of ships from cape town to UK in 1906 and + 1915
Also a departure from Cape Townin 1908 and know that the father was a gold miner but dont know what town they lived in .

Have you looked on family search ? They have some records of South Africa.

Thanks Sandra im looking through that collection now

These Cornthwaites were too young to marry in South Africa but I may find some baby births or deaths to this couple in that period .

Family search does not seem to have any records of residence

There is a probate of a john t cornthwaite who was born in same town as James ( Dalton on furness) *a few years earlier 1871 .so I will see if there is a connection in uk and post any foindings on thread in Lancashire forum

A dna match vaguely remembers a South Africa connection

Two daughters were baptised in UK in 1907 but went back to Uk after

One daughter was baptised in uk in 1902

Another daughter was born in UK in 1917

The daughters married in UK between 1920 & 1940

So the South Africa missing years are 1902 to 1906 &
1908 from ship record ...to 1915 fathers return

I would have thought it would be expensive to make journeys back and forth with whole family
Dorothy was an infant on ship arrival .if she was born on the ship would there be a record ?

It would appear James contracted a lung disease while working underground.

Great find thank you .pam

where did you find the first reference does SAB stand for south Africa board

And can you tell me which.years the subscription site covers
I know there were other J CORNWAITE s in South Africa but that lung injury would explain to UK and also why the couple would decide to get married legally in 1915 to make sure she had documents for any compensation claims

These are the South African archives. You will see SAB and what it stands for. The website does crash from time to time so be aware if you see a error message. Link http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl
