Commercial Road Ellon.
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 19:46 BST (UK) »
Would aanyone have any idea where a house called BEECHLEA was on Commercial Road in Ellon? I'm not sure if it's gone or had a name change. My G. Uncle lived there in the 1940's.

Hi

On the 1940 Valuation Rolls on Scotlands People there is this entry:

Charles CLARK
Proprietor Occupier
HOUSE AND GARDEN BEECHLEA COMMERCIAL ROAD
ELLON
1940
VR008700140-

If you look at the original image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you hopefully will get further details from surrounding properties as to where it was located.

The VRs currently stop at 1940. SP are adding more over time.

Monica

Always worth going to Google maps and using Streetview to look at the houses. You might come across the house name in gilt on the glass above a door or on a sign somewhere.

I looked yesterday, Greenlea is the only one with a name.  Based on the Valuations it would be the 5th door same side up the street.  I couldn't see if it had a name, someone had the gall to plant a tree.  About a third of the way up on the left side.

May I suggest that you post your query on the Ellon Memories facebook page? I'm sure someone will know the answer!

Old maps, show Beechlea on a short road, or likely a driveway, leading off Commercial Road. This road/driveway is now named Beechwood Avenue and is lined with modern bungalows. In 1983, Beechlea was advertised for sale as a, "most desirable Detached Dwelling House, occupying a superior position in an acre of established gardens." Address at that time was Beechlea, Beechwood Avenue. In the late 1980s, the owner was granted planning permission to turn Beechlea into a private, residential care home. I suspect Bonnyton Care Home, an older building which sits at the end of Beechwood Avenue, is Beechlea House. Hope someone can confirm, or otherwise.

I did suggest that sams mam post her query on the Ellon Memories page but so far she hasn't. Would it be okay if I copy your post onto that page & see if I can get confirmation on your thoughts? I am from that area & are familiar with Ellon :)

p.s. I like your name :)

Hello flst,
Yes, it's okay to copy my post. I've just had a look through the British Newspaper Archive and Beechlea seems to have been up for sale in 1983 and again in 1986. There are some Death Notices in the "Aberdeen Press and Journal" and "Aberdeen Evening News" around 1993/4 with the address, Beechlea Residential Home, and Beechlea Nursing Home, Ellon.
We lived near Ellon for a few years in the 1970s. We've been back home in Fife for more than 40 years but still like a drive up to Ellon when we visit friends in Aberdeen. Some fond memories of a lovely town and people.
