Ontario baptisms
« on: Sunday 23 August 20 15:22 BST (UK) »
Looking for the baptisms of the four children of Charles Littlejohn and Maria Lynch.

Mary Jane b. 1860, Catherine b. 1863, Ellen b. 1868 & Charles b. 1871.

Maria was an Irish Catholic so I assume the children were baptised as Catholic.

I have all the census and death records but cannot find the marriage of Charles & Maria which should have been prior to 1860. Charles was born in Scotland in 1838 and Maria in Ireland in 1841.

It is a long while since I did any research on this line so apologise if I have queried this before.

The family lived in Wentworth County, Ontario before crossing the border into Detroit in 1896.

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths did not begin in Ontario until 1869.

The Archives of Ontario holds marriage registrations and the indexes (where they exist), from 1801 to 1938. There are numerous gaps in the pre 1869 records.

Thank you for your reply.

I was hoping that I would be able to find the baptisms on Church records.

I have subscriptions to Ancestry & Find my Past ( both World editions) and am registered with familysearch and the only records that result from searching are the census records which I already have.

So it looks like I will never be able to view the records I would love to see.

Kind regards,

Poirot

Try contacting the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hamilton to see where the records might be kept. They likely have an archivist who may be able to help.

FamilySearch does have some, but they are only browseable, not searchable; however, Wentworth/Hamilton doesn't seem to be part of the collection. Ancestry seems to have the same collection.

The original Catholic Church burned in 1859 and then reopened in late 1860 as St. Mary's so chances of finding any baptisms pre 1860 are zilch but late 1860 worth a try...the first paragraph suggests you email Dominy your query.

Good luck.

While the mother was Catholic, the husband and children are all shown as Presbyterian in the 1871 Census.

Thank you all your replies. I am very grateful for your interest.

I have tried all the avenus suggested but have not got any nearer to finding the information requested.

Some months ago I posted a request as to how to stop people linking their trees to mine incorrectly. Because of this I deleted my tree from Ancestry. Today I put it back on but made it private. I was amazed at the number of hints I got from them and the most interesting was the 1900 census in Detroit. The information recorded was completely wrong. All the dates of birth of the four children was way out and it said that Charles and Maria had been married for 30 years making it 1870.

The first child Mary Jane was born in 1860 and I think she found the secret of eternal youth as she got younger on every census as did her sisters.

I had assumed that because Maria was a Catholic that she and Charles would have been married in a Catholic Church and that the children would have been brought up in that faith.
