Ancestors who emigrated 1820 and settled in Indiana.
« on: Friday 28 August 20 18:09 BST (UK) »
My Great x 3  Grandfather Edward Redman and second wife Jane and 7 children emigrated and I believe settled in Posey Indiana. I found 3 of their sons quite easily but only one is actually documented as being born in Uk. I can get them up to 1990’s.  There is another son Jesse but have found absolutely nothing on him. Also there are 3 more children , 2 girls and an Elisha is that name male or female.  My worry is that I don’t have enough proof so have been re-visiting my research but lack of resources and knowledge of US family history is frustrating me.

My question, is there anyone out there who has English Redmans in their tree?  Or anyone able to help with look-ups or anything really. Obviously I can give more detail but didn’t want to confuse you all.

I have posted a few times on this subject so apologies if I am doing this all wrong. Tbh it’s just a massive plea for help   ;D

I will link one of the other threads for you Jane so that people don't repeat what you already have.

You also had a link to a newspaper reporter at one time who was trying to help, presume that avenue is not producing anything new ?

Thanks Sandra. I have yet to learn how to link threads, especially on iPad.

All my contacts who helped me before have not replied to me or have nothing to add.  The atrocious weather has got me back into research. What bugs me about this one is the lack of info for Edward’s 2nd wife Jane, absolutely nothing found on her just details of her marriage. Am working on her too but just doesn’t seem to be records in UK or anything when they got to States  ???

is this Martha Redman, b 1815?

Martha Redman and William Jeffries, married 10 March 1847, Posey County
also indexed as Martha Jane Redman

If so, she might have died soon thereafter, since here is also:
William P Jeffries and Eleanor McDavid, marry 28 March 1849, Posey County
also indexed as Eleano McDaniel

William and Eleanor are on the 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Black Township, Posey County.

Was Josias called Joseph in America. If so, you probably have this for him:
Joseph Redman and Elizabeth Davis, married 18 Feb 1830, Posey Co, IN
also indexed as Joel Redman. no image available at ancestry.com

-----
1830 Census, Black Township, Posey County, IN

Joes Redman household
1 white male 20 to 30
1 white female 20 to 30
-----
an Edward Readman, age 75, died 25 Jan 1913, Mt Vernon, Posey County, son of Joseph Readman, unknown birth place, and unknown mother, born Posey County IN

===========
are you sure Edward Redman, born 1763, husband of Hannah Brockhurst and Jane Greenfield, lived until 1831? This looks like his son Edward with Jane in the household. On the same page of the 1830 census as above

Edward Redman
free, white males:
1 under 5, 1 5 to 9, 1 20 to 29,
free white female:
1 under 5, 1 15 to 19, 1 40 to 49

----------
This might be Mary Redman, b 24 Oct 1808:
Mary Redman, married Zimri Mills, 30 April 1826, Posey County, IN

A tree for Mary (Redman) Mills and children. The tree says she died in 1837. no source given.
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/MFG3-S3Y

a tree at ancestry says Mary Ann Redman, b 24 Oct 1808, Billinghurst, Sussex, died 17 July 1838, in Posey County. no spouse known, no source given. The same tree said that Edward and Jane had a daughter Anna, born 1804. Is that correct?

Last thought - if you haven't already done so, you should try looking through the 1830 census of Black Township, Posey County, In. You can probably browse it at familysearch, I'll see if I can find the starting page in a minute.
You might find Elisha or Jessie as heads of a household, but indexed so poorly that they doesn't show up in a search.

This will take you to page 5 of the Township, where Edward and "Joes" are listed. It looks like 221 pages for the township, but some might be blank.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHPB-3VN

edited to add: they're not exactly "blank" - they are the columns for slaves and free black persons, (which I don't see any of so far in the Township),  plus the totals of each household.

Oldohiohome, thank you.

Yes Josia was Joseph. Who married Elizabeth Davis. Edward who died in 1913 was his son.

The Edward who died in 1831 was not my GT x 3 but his son  my Edward died 1833. This is backed up by litigation papers I have concerning wills.

I have 1830 census at but I think the Edward is the younger ascit fits with his children and it crossed my mind the female 40-49 could be Jane but without names it’s hard to say.

I think you have found Mary, thanks.

Will look at census for Black Township.

A lot to keep me occupied .
