Sarah Low / Dollar - Finding First Husband and Death
« on: Saturday 29 August 20 00:22 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down a relation called Sarah Low who married Charles James Grange in 1839 in St James parish. On their marriage certificate she is called Sarah Dollar and is a widow, her father is John Low a Planter.

I'm guessing Planter means he owned a Plantation but I'm unsure. I can't find who her first husband Mr Dollar was and where she then dies. From family letters Charles James Grange dies in 1859 in Sierra Leone but Sarah isn't mentioned.

Any help would be appreciated!

For reference is this Charles and Sarah in 1841 living in Westminster -  listed as born in Middlesex - with daughter Sarah from the previous marriage ??

Any idea when he left England or was he just working out there temporarily?

Yes I believe this is them but the ages for Charles and Sarah aren't quite correct, Charles was born 1815 and I believe Sarah was born in 1809 so I would conclude who every filled out the census form may have been guessing the ages to an extent which would explain Sarah being 5yo when Charles and Sarah only got married in 1839.

I wouldn't think Sarah was from the previous marriage because she has the last name Grange and it was Sarah Low/Dollar who was married previously.

We are unsure because the letter just refers to his sister being upset at her youngest brothers death of Yellow Fever in Sierra Leone. We don't know why he was there but it was likely to gain a position in the civil service there and the records aren't all computerised there yet so I haven't been able to find a death record.
