I think I've sussed out how to find service records for Australian service personnel. How do I find info on civilians

Excellent question.

I think the best place to find resources to help advance family history quests would be to consider accessing the live links available at RChat's Australia Resources board and the sub-boards there.  It is important to remember that Australia has fairly strict privacy rules and regulations and that the vast majority of Australians are civilians.
