O'Hara Lineage from Possibly County Cork
« on: Saturday 29 August 20 22:29 BST (UK) »
Good day.  It appears my GGGF and GGGM (John and Mary Ahern/O'Hara) were born in Billston, England but the US census shows both their parents born in Ireland.  John was born in 1856 and Mary 1858 so thinking their parents were born in the 1830's?  John's parents (John O'hara ... same as son... and Mary Henry/O'Hara) were possibly born in the Cork area and I strongly suspect Mary came from that area as well.  It appears her parents may have been Cornelius Ahern and Bridget Ahern (1832-1904), dies in US.  Any info on the O'Hara's or Ahern's would be appreciated, along with siblings.  Thanks,
Frank

Hello and welcome, Frank :)

This site https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ has birth indexes which shows mother’s name too. You need to register but it is free and you find births through the option ‘order certificates online’ but you do not need to commit to purchase.

John O’Hara mmn Henrey 1858 June quarter vol 6b pg 480

Looking at other siblings, there are variations in spellings which is quite usual for that time.

In case you do not have it, here is your family in 1861 transcribed as ‘Hard’ on Ancestry
1861 2005 /47/31

John O Hard 26 yrs
Mary Hard   22 yrs
John Hard   3 yrs
Thomas Hard 1 yrs

The family, several more children, are transcribed as Hora.

If you need the details, I can post them (or someone will  ;) )

Birth
Mary Aherin Wolverhampton September 1858 vol 6b pg 454 with mother’s name Gogan

I can’t see some of her siblings - spellings probably but there is Julia Aherin mmn Goddins born 1865

This is also a useful site for a general search and then follow up with the GRO site

Edward Aherin birth 1856 mmn Goggins.

That seems more likely a surname.

Here they are in 1861 -the census page looks like ‘Ahorn’

This is from one site
1861 2005/55/5

William Aborn 29 yrs Labourer b County Limerick
Bridget Aborn   28 yrs b Mayho.     (Will be Mayo, I’m sure)
Edward Aborn 4 yrs
Mary Aborn 2 yrs
Bridget Aborn 9 months

There is this marriage which is very likely

Walsall, December 1853
Bridget Goggins and William Hearn are on the same page
Bridget Varden   27

Lastly, going back to the O’Haras, there is this marriage

1856 June quarter 6b pg 676

John O’Hara and Mary Henry are on the same page

The marriage certificates would give you their fathers’ names

There are a couple of possibilities for Mary in 1851 census , Walsall but you need her father’s name to be certain.

Is this information helpful to you?

As I wrote the marriage certificates may help you confirm fathers’ names and sometimes witnesses are relatives too.
Was this supposition on your part re Cork and Cornelius Ahern etc?

John's parents (John O'hara ... same as son... and Mary Henry/O'Hara) were possibly born in the Cork area and I strongly suspect Mary came from that area as well.  It appears her parents may have been Cornelius Ahern and Bridget Ahern (1832-1904), dies in US.  Any info on the O'Hara's or Ahern's would be appreciated, along with siblings.  Thanks,
