Henry Trimmer and his wife Sarah, and the Bargroves of Sydenham
« on: Monday 31 August 20 15:55 BST (UK) »
Hello there

I am researching a Henry Trimmer b ca. 1784 (place not known according to the 1851 census) and his wife Sarah b ca. 1789 in Wandsworth.

The only marriage I have found is for a Henry Trimmer to a Sarah Trotter at Hackney St John 25 Dec 1809.  It seems a little out of the way for them to marry, but the fact that I am failing entirely to find a Sarah Trotter in Wandsworth also makes me doubt that this is the correct marriage. Can anyone help locate an alternative please?

Their son Daniel married an Elizabeth Bargrove 1 May 1843 at Newington St Mary - she stated her father's name as being James Bargrove deceased.  In subsequent censuses her place of birth is Sydenham, but I cannot find any baptism for her or death pre-1843 for her father.  Again any help and clues would be very welcome.

Thank you in advance

Does the 1841 for Henry, Sarah, Daniel give any clues.

Is there a baptism for Daniel and/or any other siblings with those parents that might help?

Hi there

Thanks for getting onto this so fast

Yes I've spotted that one but it is not even an adjacent parish to Wandsworth - Tooting Graveney, part of Streatham and Wimbledon lie between Wandsworth and Merton, so I'm exhausting other routes first

Not likely to have been a widow already by 1809 is she.  No I can see it says spinster.  Hmmm.

Re Elizabeth Bargrove this wouldn't have anything to do with her would it?

I haven't checked her age with Daniel on census yet just the marriage "full age"

Baptism 20 May 1833

Sarah is possibly 56 in 1851 but transcribed as 50-  Birthplace Wandsworth

1841 she is 45 so aged between 45-49 due to the rounding instructions for the 1841 census

Birthyear around 1795 would preclude an 1809 marriage but she died 1854 aged 72 ???

Eldest child in 1841 is Elizabeth aged 20-24

1851 shows an 18yr old g/dtr Emma Briggs.  In 1841 there is a 5yr old Anne Briggs living with them so one of their daughters married a Briggs

EDIT

Benjamin Briggs married Jane Trimmer 1829.  1841 has Jane Briggs aged 30 living in Wandsworth

In reply to the earlier question about their children's baptisms they all took place in Wandsworth.
Jane Elizabeth 16 Dec 1810
Eliza 2 May 1813
Daniel 6 Aug 1815
Eliza ca 1821 and Emma ca 1826 (from the 1841 census)
James Alexander 29 Apr 1832

As regards the illegitimate child in Sydenham - yes it is the same Elizabeth Bargrove as the mother as Harriet was living with the family in 1851.

Daniel and Elizabeth had four children already by the time the married - the first, Daniel James, in Sydenham and all subsequent children in Wandsworth

The ones I have found are
Daniel James 1837
Eliza Ann 1839
Sarah 1841
Emma Jane 1843
George 1844
Louisa 1848
Henry 1849
Elizabeth Jane 1850
Jane 1852
Susannah 1855
