What Tree Program
« on: Wednesday 02 September 20 15:40 BST (UK) »
For many years I have been using an old Family Tree Maker version 10 that my computer is not happy with.  When I got this computer about tree years or so ago, I opted for Windows 7 rather than Windows 8 and every time I open the Family Tree the computer tells me that there is a compatibility problem but runs the program anyway.
I want to upgrade but do not want to go with Ancestry and their Cloud system.
I am doing two different trees, My wife's and my own, on two different computers.
What program can I buy on disc that will allow me to upload the files from Family Tree Maker.

Thanks in anticipation

RootsMagic will import FTM files (2014 and earlier) and integrates with Ancestry.
You can get hints from FamilySearch, Ancestry and MyHeritage (If you want to use them!).

Don't see FTM2017 on sale anywhere. Amazon seems to have had their shelves cleared and there isn't even one on ebay. I suspect that FTM2017 will die a quick and sudden death in the near future.

Having said that. Roots Magic it probably a better option for me.
I'm only dabbling and tidying up on the tree now and I'm more interested now in making copies on disc that I can distribute to the family.

Still open to suggestions though.

Cheers

I am going to gave to make the same decision, not compatible with Windows 10 and the prog itself coming to an end, I have had FTM maker since 1995, feel to it is to late to  start a new pro but I will have to or lose 26 years of work

A repeat of what I have bored people with many times . . . . .

If you have media, then good luck      ( see below )

Text only?
Use gedcom (version up to v5.5.1 ) [ the last version of the "official" gedcom specification ]
Anything over that version is specific to the software package you are using, and "non-standard" in gedcom terms.

Export your tree in gedcom format (keep backup COPIES), do not delete any file.
Ensure that any folder containing copies of media are copied.

KEEP AT LEAST MULTIPLE BACKUP COPIES ON MULTIPLE DRIVES,

You can import a gedcom file into most software.
You can also import a gedcom file into ZOOMPAST.com (FREE)
You can also convert the gedcom file into a piece of software named GEDXLATE and produce an Excel file and others.

Before you do anything . . . . .
take multiple backup copies of absolutely everything
AND
make copious notes of what each named file/folder contains.

Ray
ps Take multiple backup copies on separate drives   and do not keep them on your base computer.
Even give copies to a relative (etc) to keep "in their loft/attic"
"The wise man knows how little he knows, the foolish man does not". My Grandfather & Father.

"You can’t give kindness away.  It keeps coming back". Mark Twain (?).
