Have you expanded to your distant matches to see if Maureen or Peter appear as a shared match?

On social media (fb) have you looked at their friends to find their family eg if they are "Lewis" see if there are other Lewis' and work out how they are related to each other.

I have a 336 match we share a grandmother but I didnt know her married name and he didnt know she.d had a baby before marriage

He didnt have a tree but I worked it out by eliminating all shared matches to my father then to mothers birth father
Any close matches left would be on mothers side

Also used the shared matches of shared matches and colour coding techniques .

Then messaged saying" do you hsve a relative called .....?"

Luckily got a reply .

Even if he.d had a tree the only surname we had in common was grandmothers maiden name which was spelt wrong on marriage certificate to his grandfather.

looking by location didnt help either as she moved away from home town .

Good luck ...

Thanks for the tips.

I am still working through the shared matches.

I will also see if I can get some Cousins to take a DNA test which should help in narrowing the branches down.

As it is I cannot presently work out for sure if the “Lewis” connection is via my Paternal or Maternal side, my guess based purely on my tree unknowns is that they are on my Paternal side.

To find which side it's from take the highest shared match them look at their shared matches with them then look at any different shared matches for example if Maureen has shared matches with A B + C they might have   a bigger match to you or one with a bigger tree Z Y Or Z
X may have a match to your mother

You can create colour groups for your matches so in the notes write anything significant like location occupations or names

Are you on ancestry ? You can make a closed private  tree with potential Lewis grandfather for example

Hope that helps

I have a known second cousin (via his mother)  with 340 cM over 11 segs.  I checked up and found that I also linked with him more distantly through his father.  Have you checked for a double relationship.

Apologies if this possibility has been mentioned  on the thread previously.

Do you have relatives not too distant that you know how they connect. If they don't come up as shared matches with Maureen it may mean they are from the other side ...or that their connection is too distant
But for example s second cousin from your mums side will likely match any other second cousin

The latter is one avenue that if I can get a Cousin on each Side DNA tested it will narrow down the probables.

It helps in that each of my Grandparents was from very different areas of England where each of the families lived for at least 150 years.

You don't necessarily need to get s cousin from each side if you can identify your great aunt and uncles descendants or if your second cousins have tested

Depends on your age

Looking at my aunt's DNA
She's in her 90.s no cousins tested
She's among the youngest but she matches grandchildren of her cousins
The trick is to build your tree sideways

For my DNA I know that mutual matches from this aunt are from my father's side

It would help in extra ways.

I have been creating Family Trees for them based on their parent that is in effect an In Law of mine and I am at the limit of inclusions.

One of my Cousins Mother passed away when my Cousin was only eight and she knew very little about her Mum and family.
