St Cuthbert's Chapel, Leadgate

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any information on St Cuthbert's Chapel, Broom, Iveston?

My Great Grandparents got married at this chaple in 1929, but after doing some research it looks like the chapel was not in use past 1869?

Any information would be both interesting and grateful

The Brooms was definitely in use after the date you give.

From what I have found out St Cuthbert's was a tiny chapel, then when there was a migration of Irish people to the town in the 1800's, Our Blesswd Lady and St Joseph was built not far away and St Cuthbert's was left standing from 1869? All very confusing if you ask me haha

Trying to get my facts right 

St Cuthberts Chapel, Brooms was closed in 1869 and replaced by Our Blessed Lady and St Joseph (also known as The Brooms). https://consettmagazine.com/2016/02/03/the-reformation-and-brooms-consett-history-67930/

St Cuthberts became the Sacristy to the new chapel.

I think your couple must actually have been married at the new chapel.

Ahh OK - I thought this may have been the case. I find it odd that the marriage certificate says St Cuthbert's and not Our Blessed Lady and St Joseph though....especially when St Cuthbert's was replaced 60 years later?! Strange haha

I have my Great Grandfather's/Grandmother's marriage cert (Simon Peter Conroy & BridgetMcCabe) and on this it records that they married at St Cuthbert's Chapel in 1873.  Yet when I went to the Durham archives a good while back I found this was on the Our Blessed Lady & St Joseph records.  I agree this is confusing.
