I wonder if there's any way now, to prove that this 1870 Joseph is really 'MY' Joseph?

This isn't the right Julia, she is still with John and 2 daughters in 1911. Ah , worth a try.

Have you discounted this 'elderly'  couple who are in Manchester in 1939 as being Joseph and his new lady friend

Marriages Mar qtr 1931
Lang    Elizabeth Ann
Scaife  Joseph
Manchester N.    8d   655

Hi Rosie

Sorry to be a pain :-)

Did you find this in the 1939 Register, because I can't find it.
All I can see is a Widow, Annie Scaife, living with a daugher and 2 sons (jane, Joseph and Herbert).

Can you help please as I think you might have found him!

I couldn't find any connections for those addresses, other than the one obvious one, the St Augustine Street address, which has a connection to later records (already mentioned).

Looking at the families it appears that Julia was the wife of James Morris (1974-1906) and the daughter of Robert and Belinda. Jayne has stated James died in 1906 but (I don't think) she gave his surname.

Note that Julia and James were living next door to the Scaifes, namely John Gibson Scaife and his wife Jane (parents of Joseph, born 1870), on the 1901 census.

Looking at Joseph and Julia's children there appears to 7, 3 of whom died young. Looking in certain records, Eileen appears to have a connection to a Julia Morris.

Personally, if I was researching this family, in particular Joseph, there's a few records I'd be getting:

1) Marriages certificates of Lillian and her siblings (may be not all of them but at least a couple) to check the details of the father and whether he was recorded as deceased or not.

2) Death certificate of Johanna Scaife (1930) to confirm she was the wife or widow of Joseph. Her martial status would give some indication as to whether Joseph was still alive or not.

3) Marriage certificate of Joseph Scaife and Elizabeth Lang (1931) to determine if he was a widower and the son of John Gibson Scaife (the blacksmith).
