Thomas Rogerson
« on: Friday 25 September 20 13:07 BST (UK) »
I'm fairly new to Scottish research and I'm trying to find a marriage between Thomas Rogerson born around 1816/18 Dumfriesshire to Agnes Copland/Coupland.

I've found them on the 1851 census at Townfoot, Dryfesdale with children Jane 11 David 9 Thomas 3 and Agnes 1.
I would also like to establish when he died. I last found him on the 1891 census at Firpark, Dryfesdale living with his daughter Agnes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Jenny

I wonder if Agnes could also be Isabella ? Would fit with the birth of Jane ? That would be to convenent  :)

ROGERSON THOMAS - ISABELLA ROGERSON/FR129 (FR129)
09/12/1838 - 813/A - 20 44 Applegarth and Sibbaldbie. (Dumfriesshire)

Sandra

Maybe not - I can see another Rogerson family in census with those names.

Hi Sandra

thank you for your speedy response. I think you are spot on with the death of Thomas. I was thinking that they hadn't married but as I don't know my way around Scottish records, wondered if I'd missed something.

I did find an Agnes COUPLAND with children Jean ROGERSON 2 and David ROGERSON 0 on the 1841 census in Bield, Wamphrey so presume this is her.

I subscribe to FindMyPast so can't see the family trees on Ancestry. Do they give the parents of Thomas?

The best source for Scottish records is Scotland's People. ( This is where the original records can be found. The likes of FindMyPast and Ancestry can be useful finding tools).

I would suggest the following. The death record found by Sandra in 1894 ought to name Thomas Rogerson's parents.

The 1861 census for Thomas appears to show a youngest son George, aged 5. There is a birth for George Rogerson showing in Scotland's People: 1855   820/84  Dryfesdale. 1855 was the year that statutory registration started in Scotland. In that year the records are remarkably detailed. George's birth record ought to tell you when Thomas and Agnes were married.

thank you for your reply. I am quickly running out of credits on Scotland's People so wondered if there was any other way of finding out the information.

A couple of trees give varying parents - David Rogerson 1784 and Charlotte Bell 1799 - marriage 16 April 1817 Tundergarth,Dumfries.

or David Rogerson 1801 and Janet Wilson 1784 - source marriage date attached shows 8 Sept 1837  :-\  (this seems strange)
