Blind/Deaf/Dumb ranking system in the 1910 Federal Census?
« on: Friday 02 October 20 01:17 BST (UK) »
Hi there, have tried Googling and searching on Rootschat but am not coming up with an answer. Can someone please explain to me if there is a ranking system (1 - 10) for "blind, deaf and dumb" on the 1910 Federal Census. This is my relative:

John McCaffery, b. 1875 in Ireland, boarding in 1910 with Dady and Catherine O'Reily (Manhattan). He is a labourer. In the question "Veteran", the answer is 5. "Blind": 9. "Deaf and Dumb": 8. Is this meant to be, between 1 and 10 how blind/deaf/dumb are you? The same with the Veteran question.

I'm new to researching in America, so any help would be appreciated. Many thanks!

Here are the instructions to the enumerators for 1910

https://www.census.gov/history/pdf/1910instructions.pdf

Clip attached of the relevant section.
Doesn’t actually help!
Perhaps those numbers were added later in some sort of tallying exercise?  Hopefully someone will know.

And obviously a veteran is either a veteran or not.
Same with the question “survivor of the civil war”.  That is surely either yes or no.  Modified to add clip for this too.

Could it be that the enumerator or his supervisor used those columns for notes or record keeping codes? Can you post it?

Thanks

here is a link to the index results.

I don't know what all those numbers mean, but I don't think they are answers to the column headings for anyone on that page. Someone somewhere knows what they are. - I've always just ignored them, but maybe it's time for me to find out.

This looks like one of those times when you have to know the answer already in order to find it on Google. I searched for the words "1910 us census codes in last columns" and found this:

"The four numbers you see to the right on the 1910 US census are annotations made during the post-enumeration processing. The codes were placed on the census to support and speed up the keypunch process/system. ... "

at https://genealogy.stackexchange.com/questions/3257/understanding-last-three-columns-of-1910-us-census

There is more there, including the sources for the person's answer.

Thanks for asking, now we all know :)
