John Scott & Barbara Johnston

I am trying to work out whether my 5th great grandfather could have had Irish roots. I am putting this in the Aberdeenshire area because he married one Barbara Johnston in Aberdeen on November 15 1773, and other than him being born in 1750 and a sailor, that is basically all I know and have been able to find.

Can anyone help?

The problem is Scot/Scott are one in the same and there a zillions of them.  There is even a John Scott who married a Barbara Johnstone 7 years later in Angus. 

So the more information you can provide the more eyes will look.

Who were their children and when/where were they born.  The majority of Scot's followed the infamous Scottish naming pattern which might help in providing clues to John and Barbara's parents and their origins.

There were more than 400 John Scott’s born in Scotland 1740 – 1758, 10 in Abeerdeenshire.

There were six possible Barbara’s born in Aberdeenshire none in Aberdeen.

Did the marriage record give ant additional information?

As far as I can see they only had one child in Aberdeen, below.

There were two other marriages of John Scott to Barbara Johnston/e in

St Vigeans & Arbirlot Angus, both couples had children there.
