Gourlay Sister's
« on: Sunday 04 October 20 13:24 BST (UK) »
Dear All

Can anyone help me with researching for death and marriage for these two sister's.  They are Ann Gourlay born 23 August 1824 in Kirkpatrick Fleming and Mary Gourlay born 16 February 1811  in Kirkpatrick Fleming.  Their parents were John Gourlay and Jannet Young.

Thank you
Regards
Oletta

GOURLAY   ANN   JOHN GOURLAY/JANNET YOUNG    23/08/1824   Kirkpatrick Fleming

I note the record for Ann above on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but no Mary around 1811

MARGARET is the nearest to the year 16/09/1812 and there a five others in between.

There are only two marriages in the County on SP .

GOURLEY   JAMES   MARION DICKSON   14/02/1845   Annan
GOURLEY   MARY   GEORGE BELL   22/10/1829   Graitney or Gretna

No marriage in Scotland for John & Janet but possible birth John below, 8 in the County for Janet.

JOHN GOURLAW 11/09/1787Kirkpatrick Fleming
SAMUEL GOURLAW/MARY HEARKNESS

It looks like the marriage in 1829 may be correct. Only child?
BELL   JOHN   GEORGE BELL/MARY GOURLIE    14/11/1832   Middlebie

Also the marriage of Margaret in 1841 -
on the 1851 census born Kirkpatrick Fleming, with William and three children born 1843 – 1848
Plus later.
RULE   ROBERT   WILLIAM RULE/MARGARET GOURLEY    02/02/1853   Annan
RULE   GEORGE   WILLIAM RULE/MARGARET GORLEY    24/03/1851   Annan

No trace of Ann unless the one on the 1841 census should read 17 but unlikely as the SP transcript is the same.

1851 census has 3 grand daughters living with John and Jannet Gorley.
Margaret Irving (11months), birth on SP 6/4/1850 Kirkpatrick Fleming, f-Christopher Irving, m-Jane Gourly.
Elizabeth Black (6)
Jannet Thomson (7)
Have not found a birth for Elizabeth or Jannet but would assume their mother/s would be daughters of John and Jannet.
There are a few Gorley/Gourley/Gourlay headstones at Kirkpatrick Fleming Churchyard on Find A Grave.

Hello Colc

Thank you very much for the information you very kindly sent me!  The 1851 census is this the one you can hardly read.  I think this is what it reads:-
William Rule (Head) 34 head occupation something and handloom weaver (married) born Annan
Margaret Rule 20 born Kirkpatrick Fleming
I think it reads William (Son) 1 born Annan
Agnes (Daughter) born Annan 6 and Jannet (Daughter) born Annan 3
Cannot read were they lived at.

Regards
Oletta

Good Afternoon hmcc

Elizabeth and Jannet are the daughters of John and Jannet  (nee Young) Gourlay.
I don't think Janet was married to Christopher Irving but they went to Australia.  All that I know is that Jannet died in 1918 in South Australia.  I also have to find what happened to Jean Gourlay born abt 1824 in Kirpatrick Fleming and Agnes born 1813 in Kirkpatrick Fleming parents also John and Jannet Gourlay

Hello Colc
The 1851 census is this the one you can hardly read.

The census is an Ancestry transcript.

Downies Wynd, Annan.

William Rule   34
Margaret Rule   34
William Rule   8
Agnes Rule   6
Jannet Rule   3

This seems to agree with the SP Transcripts.
