Jane Pearce/Bennett Islington
« on: Monday 05 October 20 20:39 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find what happened to my Grt Grt Grandma's eldest sister? Jane Pearce was born in 1940 in Wigston (Two Steeples), Leicestershire. She is the eldest of 11 children of Sawyer/Woodman Henry Pearce and wife Eliza Goodwin. I have lots of information and even photographs of all the other children and their spouses and families but Jane remains a mystery. I can trace her in the 41, 51 and 61 census and then she goes off the radar. I had previously assumed she had died between the 61 and 71 census as I couldn't find a suitable marriage but had found a possible death entry. Every now and again as more archives have come online I have had another dabble and last night I found a marriage that I can say is 100% her. She married Benjamin Bennett on September 8th 1862 in Islington. I know it is her as one of the witnesses is one of her her sisters husbands; Josiah Monk and the address given is my Pearce family's address from the 1861 census (12, Cottenham Road, Islington). I thought I had cracked it with this new info, but now I can not find them going forward. I even tried to find Benjamin before the marriage but have had little success as I don't know where he was born. Benjamin's father is given as Giles Bennett, Rope maker (which I kind of imagined would make the Bennetts a family from a coastal location?) and Benjamin is 20 years of age in 1862. Can anyone locate them anywhere as a family after 1862? It is possible they emigrated, several of the other Pearce girls went to Canada but not until 1908 and my Canadian contacts don't have any knowledge of Jane either. Any help would be very very much appreciated.  ;D

Maybe she died or he died and she married again in between censuses?

In 1841 Giles Bennett, 35, "roper" living South Molton,  Devon

In  1851/1861. Rope and bag manufacturer.  South Molton

Can find no sign of Benjamin but looks like his family.

PS I've just seen Christine's post. I stand corrected

Thank you, Yes I have also just found the Cullompton family. I thought they looked like a good match except Harriet is a widow in 1851 and in this case would Giles not be deceased on the 1862 marriage certificate? I also found what looked like this Benjamin on the 1861 as a visitor in Portland, can't for the life of me read his occupation though!

I reckon that occupation in 1861 is Fundsholder, which does seem most unlikely!
They didn’t always put deceased for fathers on Marriage certs

Added, but presumably he is visiting Emma White who is a match for his sister.
