Can you date this photo of James Sayner ?
« on: Wednesday 07 October 20 19:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could you please date this photo?

I believe this may be my 4 x Great Grandfather born in Hambleton, Selby in 1894

He passed away aged 49 in December 1853, due to the dates I have doubts as to whether this may be him as he was not a wealthy man so may be possible that he could not afford a photo portrait. Also it shows on the photo it was taken in Harrogate and not the Selby area.

I'm hoping that by dating the photo I may have an idea as to whether this may be him?

I'd also be happy with any restoration to make the image clearer

Thank you

I think is 1880s, but Jim will have a better idea, it's always a good idea to post the whole photo including the back as it holds Dating info. For restoration purposes, a scan of a resolution at 300dpi if possible, will give the best result.

I assume 1894 should read 1804. You need to look for someone a generation or so later. I agree with Carol about the date, perhaps late 1880s into the early 1890s. W Davey was in Harrogate from 1886 into the 1900s when he changed the business name to Walter Davey & Son.

Here's my go at a restore.

It looks like there is writing on the back of the photo. His beard is known as a Newgate Frill.

Hi Gadget, I too reversed the image of the signature and tried to make it as clear as possible but when I came to post it I found that you had beaten me to it. My result was the same as yours,  ???

Pat - I've been trying to work out how it got there as I assume it has a card backing. It could be someone pressing very hard or maybe written on the front/accidentally transferred  to the print  :-\

There's also a curve to the right of CHRIS,
