Thank you for your interest, this is my most frustrating brick wall. On 6th May 1859, John Morris was enlisted, by Sergeant Jeffery, for ten years. His Regimental Number, which stayed with him throughout his career, was 712.

If he was illegitimate he could have made up a father’s name.

Does the marriage cert have an occupation for his father?

Yes that lady has copied my tree and then added the 1851 and 1861 census records even though the father's name and occupation is incorrect and by 1861, John Morris will have been a soldier for over a year.

I was hoping you weren't going to say that, I'm looking for a birth record or census records for John Morris and I can't find anything for this town. He was born in 1836 and his father was George (from the marriage cert).

This document came up as a hint on Ancestry this morning and I was excited to see a word that to me, starts with a "H" and was going to give me somewhere new to look.

Ecclesall Bierlow isn't a town, or even a village or suburb; it's a registration district which encompasses the west and south of Sheffield. Part of this used to be in Derbyshire, I think (but I'm not sure) that it's all inside the Sheffield boundary now (since 1940).

So you'll need to search both in West Riding of Yorkshire and in Derbyshire to cover all the options.

Looking at the 1851 and 1861 censuses that's in the tree highlighted above, the family are living on Fitzwilliam St, which is just on the edge of Sheffieldcity cntre. I've never heard of the "ecclesiastical district of Eldon" though!! There is (still) an Eldon St very close by. You'll notice that the majority of the neighbours worked in the cutlery and cutting tools manufacturing trades.
