Florida military post
« on: Friday 09 October 20 20:26 BST (UK) »
Hello,  I read that the US 5th Infantry were skirmishing with the Seminoles around Fort Myers Florida in 1857 before being sent to Utah. I found an army post return for January 1857 on Ancestry and they were at Entity? Camp  Males Inlet Florida. I have googled it and there is nothing about it, has anyone ever heard of it?
Many thanks

Best Map I could find. The Camp may have come and gone very quickly.

Had another look at the record and I think  Entity is a red herring as it appears in the corner of other records and the name should be Camp Maleo, Maleo Inlet but still no results on google

Try this

San Mateo is an unincorporated community in Putnam County, Florida, United States, located just southeast of the city of Palatka. It is on the east shore of the St. Johns River between buoys 12 and 15; stretching from Buzzard Island to the entrance to Dunn's Creek. The main road through San Mateo is US Route 17, with a southern terminus of the overlap with Florida State Roads 20 and 100.

I had a reply this morning from one of the places I contacted after finding the mistake and they say Maleo is a mispelling, it should be Malco and have sent websites with info about it. Got there in the end!  Just in from a night shift so will read through it all later,  thanks
