Magot Mill Farm
« on: Saturday 10 October 20 12:30 BST (UK) »
This farm is to be seen on the Andrews & Dury map of 1773 near Coleshill but I cannot find it elsewhere. Did the mill change it's name? Could it be what is now known as West Mill? I would be very pleased for some help. Toby.

Hi
Mentions in the newspapers up to about 1853, wonder if this is the same farm(scroll down a bit).

(Fresden Farm)
Mentioned as Maggots Mill Farm in 1852 as 3miles from Highworth and 4 miles from Faringdon in the papers.

Possibly to confirm?
1861 Census Charles Edmonds born 1803 is living at Maggot Mill Farm, Faringdon Road, Highworth.
In 1871 his address is Fresdon, Highworth.

Thank you cath51. Confusing business. Highworth baptisms show on one line Fresden and below Magot Mill Farm. Andrews & Dury show the 2 to be quite separate. Sometimes it's Coleshill and then it's Highworth.
I found your string from the Agricultural Journal but which newspapers are you referring to? T

Just small pieces about sales in the newspaper archives on FindMyPast, nothing too useful I m afraid.

Thank you cath151. I had missed those probably because I was too specific in my search.
Turning to the name of the farm. Looking at 6 inch O.S. and moving up the River Cole starting at West Mill one passes Round Robin Farm and Friesden Farm and the next mill is Coleshill Mill. No mills in between and nothing obvious in the shape of the water course to suggest at one time there was a mill there. Is any one aware of a windmill in that area? T

There is no windmill in the area these days (I live in Faringdon and walk over to Coleshill fairly frequently)

Can you compare the 1773 map with a modern map to locate position?

Thanks HarryW for that. I have tried to relate Andrews & Dury with 6inch O.S. but without success. Would you agrre from your walks that a long gone water-mill site is not obvious? T

I'll have a look the next time we go over there.

A thought:

Most of the land in and around Coleshill is owned by The National Trust.   It might be worth trying to raise a query with them.
