Evan and Elizabeth James

I’ve come to a dead end looking into what may have happened to my great grandfather and great grandmother and was hoping someone here could help in any way.

My great grandfather – Evan Mathew James was born in Aberystwyth in 1878. He is named in the 1883 census living with his mother, Jane James. I couldn’t find an entry for him in the 1891 census but in 1901 he was living as a boarder in Handsworth, Birmingham. There is no mention of a wife. My grandmother was born in 1904 and according to her birth certificate, her mother is named as Elizabeth James nee Russell. She is living with my great grandfather at 41 Miles Street in Aston. My great grandfather’s occupation is listed as a blacksmith/joinery man.

In the 1911 census, my grandmother is living with her grandmother back in Aberystwyth. There is no mention of Evan or Elizabeth. The only other mention of Evan is in my grandmothers’ marriage certificate where it’s noted he is deceased. His occupation is noted as a Coachsmith.

I cannot find a marriage certificate for Evan and Elizabeth or a death certificate for either. Any help would be appreciated.

This census has Jane's marital status as 'Dib' Is this short for Dibriod ? ie unmarried

Yes, I have no record of Jane James ever being married.

My grandmothers name was Doris May James

I can't give details but Doris May is with her grandmother Jane James in Aberystwyth in 1911.  Jane is unmarried.

Then why did you not mention him. 

These extra bits of information often help us to track back or locate other people.  It helps us if you give as much information as you can.  Do you have an address on Doris's birth certificate.

there's an Evan Mathew James of Aberystwyth on this list of volunteers in 1914

It might or might not be relevant, but there's a birth of a Gertrude May James (mmn Russell) in Aberystwyth in Dec qtr 1905.

She seems to have died in the same quarter, and so did an Elizabeth James, aged 30, with the same reference number.
