I found a pretty good fit in the Liverpool Workhouse Religious Creed Register (he had previously been in the Merchant Navy):

No 8654
Date of Admission 19 Sept 1902
Terence Keating
Age 65
Admitted from 23 Stanish St,
Religion RC
Name and address of nearest relative - wife Margt in Belmont
Location of pauper OInfirm,
Discharged 30 Sept from OIfirm

The entry below says:
No 8671
Date of Admission 19 Sept 1902
Mary Keating
Age 55
Admitted from 23 Stanish St,
Religion RC
Name and address of nearest relative - husband /8654
Location of pauper Bldg
Discharged 30 Sept from Bldg

I was hoping the 1901 census entry would confirm he was Irish :-)

On the 1901 census living at 23 Standish Street is a Mary Raney,66, widowed, mother to Henry Raney.
Others in household.  from Ireland.

Thought I should check out the address.

Have you looked on the Irish census?

Thanks chempat, I didn't think to search on the address. I couldn't find them in Ireland. But I can't find them anywhere else either.

Any idea when he had finished in the Merchant Navy?

Have you got deaths for them both?

I only have the 1854/1855 date for his MN service. It seemed to read that he finished in Liverpool.

I don't have deaths for either of them but I think I found Mary in the 1911 census. She was age 64, a widow, born Kildare Ireland, boarding at 31 Liverpool St St Helens, occupation sheet glass works.

But I can't find a death for a Terence Keating between 1901 and 1911.

I just found another entry for Terence Keating in the Liverpool Workhouse. This one says his occupation is slater and he slept the previous night at 23 Standish (not Stanish) St. His wife is Margaret (not Mary!) Keating living in Belmont Rd.

Then there's a separate entry (same day) for Margaret Keating, wife of Terence, occupation labourer in hospital, also spent the previous night in Standish St.

Very confusing :-)

In 1911 it is still Mary Raney and son Henry at 23 Standish Street, from Swinford Ireland, and it is a boarding house that she is running.  Irish boarders.

Just for background.

Mary/Margaret.
If the writing is not clear Marg. and Mary can be misread.

Belmont Road - I went to school there -St Margarets High School - Newsham Hospital was in Belmont Road - previously known as Belmont Workhouse - I wonder when they said Margaret / Mary was in Belmont road was she in Hospital / Workhouse ? or - as a Hospital Labourer - was she living in the Hospital accomodation section ?

There is a death for a Terence Keegan in 1904 age 66 in Birkenhead.

Just putting, and cannot see any candidate in 1901 for the death.  Depends what their accent was like to get from Keating to Keegan.  And why he crossed the river to Birkenhead.
