Samuel ASTON and Ann JONES
« on: Friday 23 October 20 11:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

This is probably different people but a friend has found 2 marriages and one of the Samuel Aston's will be my Great x5 Grandfather, she wrote

"Another thing that I've found, that is odd ~ the marriage of Samuel to Ann Jones ~ unless there are two Samuel Astons that married Ann Jones ~ they married twice, both by licence ~ firstly 8th Sept. 1803 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire ( both widowed and OTP)   and then again  27th November 1803 in MOLD, Flintshire ( both widowed and OTP) ~ that's 130 miles between each place, weird."

Can anyone solve this mystery? I know the signature of my Samuel Aston if that helps.

Many thanks

Eric

It does look as though they were different people, just one of those odd coincidences.  The marriage bonds are indexed at the National Library of Wales.  No occupation is given for the Merthyr Tydfil Samuel Aston, the Mold one was an excise officer.  Images of both the marriage bonds are on Familysearch:  the Merthyr Tydfil Samuel Aston signed with a mark and the Mold one signed his name.

The burial below is the best possibility I can find for the first wife of Samuel who married in Mold. 1803.

Ann Aston
Burial
28 Nov 1797
Benthall, Shropshire
Spouse Samuel Aston

The snag is there were two possible marriages and without the OPR I cannot compare his signature from the 1803 marriage.

Samuel Aston
Spouse   Anne Guest
Marriage   30/10/1783 Saint Leonard, Broseley, Shropshire

Samuel Aston
Spouse   Ann Gethen
Marriage   30/11/1795 Saint Leonard, Broseley, Shropshire

Samuel & Ann/e had several children in baptised in Broseley & Benthall but they are less than two miles apart. The events on family search were 1784 – 1800, so clearly one survived.

Might be worth a look, if it the one you may be interested in?

Thanks everyone for your contributions.

The Mold marriage is my Samuel Aston as he could sign his name.

Regards

Eric

Ironically it looks very likely the two Samuels are related.

There are 15 Samuel Aston baptisms, 1699 to 1865, listed at Broseley, Shropshire on Ancestry

The first Aston baptism recorded at Broseley was 1654

Samuell Aston 6 Mar 1699 & 9 Apr 1701 Thomas & Elizab.

Samuell Aston 26 Jan 1704 John & Mary

Samuel Aston 14 Feb 1729 Tho & Sarah

Samuel Aston 17 May 1730 Joh & Elis.

I think below is the one who married Ann Jones in Merthyr Tydfil. Ann was buried there 18 Oct 1804, age 42 after the birth of their daughter; Samuel was buried there 24 Apr 1820 age 73

Samuel Aston 23 Dec 1746 James & Margaret

Samuel Aston 26 Dec 1761 Samuel & Elis

Samuel Aston 4 Mar 1764 & 14 May 1769 Samuel & Eleanor

Samuel Aston 11 Jun 1769 Richard & Elis

Samuel Aston 1 Feb 1784 Samuel & Anne

Samuel Aston 24 Feb 1788 John & Mary

Samuel Aston 18 Jun 1797 John & Ann

Samuel Aston 27 Jul 1828 James & Mary

Samuel Aston 2 Jul 1865 Richard & Margaret

I will send a separate reply for the other Samuel, it might take a while.
