The cemetery in which he is buried is very near the place the battalion were working on improving the trench lines at Forceville, recorded in the diary on 4 May and later on Charles Avenue and Ridge Trench, all of which can be seen on the map at:

The diary does not record any casualties in the period but that is quite normal.  My guess is that he was wounded by incoming shell fire (which is recorded) sometime in the early days of May and succumbed to his wounds in a Field Ambulance (there was one right by the cemetery).
