Wiltshire Lookup Request - Non Conformist Records Devizes - ASHLEY
« on: Monday 26 October 20 17:28 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon,
I am trying to confirm the date of death and/or of burial of Joseph ASHLEY in the Quaker Cemetery in Market Lavington, Wiltshire. A headstone records his death as 3 April 1849 but the GRO record places him in the 1849 September Quarter (Devizes Vol 08 Page 263) Age 54.
There is another GRO record same name, same place, same age recorded in the 1849 June Quarter which would fit better (Devizes Vol 08 Page 261) but which is the wrong person!
Maybe very late registration, headstone inscription error, GRO clerical error?
I am keen to try to resolve this and any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
pfred

How do you know the Apr/May/Jun registration is the wrong person? Seems like that registration relates to the guy with the headstone.  And the later registration to someone else.

Are the burial registers available?

ASHLEY, JOSEPH       54  1849  J Quarter in DEVIZES   Volume 08  Page 261
ASHLEY, JOSEPH       54   1849  S Quarter in DEVIZES   Volume 08  Page 263

What makes the first GRO ref the "wrong" person?

Mi information from "Wiltshire Memorial Inscription Index"?

EDIT:
The MI "respected servant in Max Willets family 32 years"

and it's not a quaker burial. The burial ground was taken over by chapel.

The 1841 has both Josephs living in the Devizes RD.  One is in West Lavington occ servant & the other is in St Mary the Virgin occ cabinet maker

Unless you have both death certs - how do you know which is which?

What other info is on the headstone - wife’s name etc?

1841has two Joseph Ashleys of right sort of age living in Devizes Registration area

One living in West Lavington and one living in Devizes itself.

One must have died in the April, been registered in the AMJ quarter, and buried in the Quaker cemetery at Market Lavington. The other must have died later that year.

We don't know from the info we have, which is which death.

Logic might lead us to think the West Lavington one was the Market Lavington burial, just because of the name of Lavington!   But Family History is not always logical.  Either or both could have moved between 1841 and 1849.  Or the Quaker one could have been buried further afield from where he lived if Quaker burial grounds were scarce.

(snap Carole - we are thinking no the same lines)
