Was a relation of mine in the Home Guard in WW2?

or possibly WHY was a relation of mine in the Home Guard?

Age 21 in 1939, County Durham ? Should be getting ready for the Army, Navy, Air Force but a Coal Miner is exempt. In his free time he possibly be in the Home Guard.

During WW1 one of my Great Grandfathers, a Coal Miner, joined the Army. There is a letter from Mine Management asking for his release. Saved his life.

Try and find him or wife or both on the 1939 Register,

Thomas is on the 1939 living with his wife and father in law.  The covered name is probably a child of Thomas and Annie.

They had a son in 1937.

Added:  There is a likely death for the son in 2016, Durham

Home Guard records are not generally available and may still be with the MOD, except for the County of Durham (luckily) which are at TNA.

There are quite a number of SOUTHERN entries, but the only Thomas I can see was born 1905.
