Soldier? In India
« on: Wednesday 28 October 20 05:59 GMT (UK) »
The attached photo shows a gentleman with sergeants stripes in India (lahore?) abt 1882.
This does not look like an Army uniform. There is no belt or lower pockets and flap on the top pocket.
Embroidery on the sleeve? Could be 'Mess Dress'?. or could he be a policeman?
Appreciate any assistance. Thank You. David

I agree, not a policeman. The fabric looks light weight consistent with a hot country.  Lack of knotting  the sleeves and no lower pockets and absence of belt  is quite normal for some of the army uniforms of that era. It is just unfortunate there are no insignia to indicate the regiment.
