John Sim b 1816 Annan

My name is Paul from Wirral nr Liverpool. My 3rd GG was John Sim b 1815/16. I the 1851 Census for Scotland he indicates Annan as Place of Birth. He married Mary Hodgson from Cumbria. He was a Railway Labourer an children listed are Esther  (my 2nd GG) Margaret, Thomas and Mary. By 1861 he is now in Port Patrick and is listed as a Foreman of Public work. In later census's he is in the Durham area. I have hit a brick wall with tracing his parents so any help will be gratefully received.

1851 is Sims & 1861 is Simm - not Sim.  Can you confirm correct spelling?

1861 shows his birthplace as England

You didn’t say that all his children were born in England from approx 1841 so he presumably married in England.  Any English marriage cert from 1837 will have his fathers name and occupation

As he died in Scotland after 1855 his parents names will be on his death cert

Have you looked for a birth/death on Scotlands People?  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Mistranscribed as Sinn but somebody has notified a correction to Simm

Hi Carole, many thanks for replying. There do seem to be many different spellings of Sim (m). However,  You have the correct family and yes on one census he indicates England as place of birth and on another Annan, Scotland. I think he died in England in the North East.

They had a daughter Jessie b Cumberland according to the 1871 census

Possible birth June qtr 1857 - Jesse Camoran Sim -  Wigton 10b 425 mmn Hodgson

GRO confirm above birth was female

Daughters Esther & Margaret's births were registered as Simm in 1840 & 1841 - also show mmn as Hodgson

There is a marriage on freebmd December qtr 1838 Mary Hodgson & there is a John Lim on the same  Wigton 25 175

Hi Carole, went on Scotland people but could not find a birth in Annan. They also had a daughter called Tamar which seems an unusual name (more of a Cornwall link you would think)

Buying a copy of the 1838 marriage cert will give you John’s fathers name.

As an update to this thread I sent for John Sim's wedding certificate. He was married on November 11th 1838 in the district of Wigton to Mary Hodgson. His father is named as John Sim. Still not found out were John was born though. Beginning to think he was not born in Annan but in Cumberland?
