What does the armband signify?
« on: Tuesday 03 November 20 15:27 GMT (UK) »
Looking for help in identifying the significance of the woman's armband and an idea of date please. My first thoughts were nurse or suffragette but I have only seen suffragettes wearing sashes. The images are really poor, so I apologise. The photograph was taken in Cheshire. Thanks.

I would suggest someone in nursing. The dress and arm badges would probably indicate

seniority like a staff nurse or even a Matron.

Do you have a date, could she have been a voluntary aid detachment nurse ?

Since I posted I have found two sisters in the family I am working on, both are in service with the same family in 1901. One is a nurse (domestic) and the other is a housemaid. There seems to be a maid in the picture. This seems to be a reasonable fit. In 1902 the sister who was the nurse got married and had her first daughter in 1908. Their employer, Mrs Newman, married in 1894 so that would narrow the date range of the photograph to 1894-1902.
