Hocuth, Northamptonshire?
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 04:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for a place called "Hocuth" in Northamptonshire, the alleged birthplace of John Houghton, born circa 1545.  His son, Thomas, was allegedly born in this place around 1565 as well, and he may have been christened at the Holy Sepulchre in Northampton.  I've searched gazetteers and various websites via google search, but have only managed to find family tree links to this ancestor.  Given I'm finding no additional information about this place, I'm thinking it may be a transcription error that got passed down to other researchers.  Any ideas of where this "Hocuth" might be?

Hi and welcome to RootsChat.

Northamptonshire isn't in Northumberland but hopefully someone might be along soon to move this to the correct board for you.

That sounds more like it.  I'll check it out and see what I can find.  Thanks for the tip!

Oh, no!  I guess I shouldn't be posting with tired eyes.  Thanks for the heads up, and sorry to clutter the wrong board.

Cheers!

I haven't, unfortunately.  I've only begun to investigate this family, so the most I have so far are some entries in a peerage from the 1800s and links to other people's family trees, who very likely got "Hocuth" from said peerage.

Quick update-I was able to find a record of a will reading for the brother of my ancestor in Holcot, so that seems to be the place I was looking for.  Thank you so much for the lead!
