Place of birth on 1881 census - Carberry
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 02:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello, looking for some assistance on the place of birth for the bottom four entries seen on the snippet.

It's for a household of women by the name of Carberry, they were living at 53 Commercial Road, Govan in 1881.

Transcriptions state that it is "Commonlay Formanach"  and similar. This includes the LDS index on SP. I can't work it out.

I definitely think the first letter is an "F" due to it being the same as the F in "Foundry Labourer" further up the page.

It's possible it's somewhere in Fermanagh? Mary Ann aged 17 was married in a Catholic church in 1885.

Thanks!

Do you have the four on previous or later censuses and if so what are their places so birth on those censuses? :)

I see what you mean about the Fs on the page - none are crossed. Are there any examples of capital Ts on the page?

I don’t think it helps, but could it possibly be “Corn” rather than “Com”?

Do you expect them to be born in Ireland?

This might not be of relevance but there is this from a Gaelic Dictionary:
tormanach /tɔrɔmanəx/
bua. coi. -aiche
1 rumbling 2 murmuring

Could be the townland of Cornavray in the civil parish of Galloon, County Fermanagh:
https://www.townlands.ie/fermanagh/coole/galloon/cornavray/

There were definitely Carberry's there in that era, for example, the following death of a James Carberry in 1877:

I agree.
Although, it is odd that they didn’t put Ireland as the other entries on the page have.
