Military records for 1950s and 1960s.
« on: Thursday 12 November 20 20:25 GMT (UK) »
My late uncle was in the military (not sure which part) in the 50s or 60s.  I fo not have any information about his service.  How do I go about finding out who he served with and any records they may have?  Many thanks.

The records of anyone serving post 1920 are still held by the MOD, they can be applied for but, conditions apply and there is a cost of £30. See the website below.

Thank you Jebber. It says you need their military number when you apply. I don't have any information at all.   :-[

You don't need the service number but you will need his birth date and his death certificate, You will also need to know which branch of the armed services he was in (Army, Navy, RAF). All this is assuming he was in the UK military.

No, if you read the form carefully it says “Service number and/or date of birth.”

Ah, thank you both.  The first part of the web site said you needed the service number.  Thank you for checking.  I can order the death certificate but I don't know which part of the military he was in.  Hopefully they'd check for me.  I'll put army ( I have a vague memory it was the army).  Many thanks.  :)
