Parents of Richard Bunsell/Beswathick Holman (b.1826)
« on: Sunday 15 November 20 20:27 GMT (UK) »
My 4x great-grandfather was Richard Bunsell Holman.
On the 12th February 1853 Richard married Priscilla Sarah Cox at Devonport. The marriage register gives Richard’s father’s name as James Holman and James’ occupation as a Mariner.
A search in Findmypast for Richard Bunsell Holman, b.1826, Cornwall produces a British Civil Service Evidence of Age records from 1860/61. Both of Richard’s parents are now dead and a copy of Richard’s baptism record is included. Richard Beswathick Holman son of James and Elizabeth Holman of Lan House Lostwithiel. Occupation of father: Footman Richard’s aunt Sarah Holman (widow of Richard Uglow) gives his date of birth as the 4th September 1826.
I think Richard’s parents were James Holman and Elizabeth Beswathick who married on the 6th May 1826 at Lanlivery Rural.
My problem is this; I believe I’ve located Richard aged 15 on the 1841 census living in Tywardreath and working as a servant. I’ve then tried to find his parents and any siblings but all I can find are census records for a James Holman (born about 1806) and his wife Elizabeth (born about 1802) living with their family at Bodmin Gaol where James is a gate porter/turnkey and eventually a debtors warder. I can’t find a James Holman who’s occupation is a mariner. I just need confirmation that either the occupation on the marriage certificate for Richard’s father was wrong or, if he was a mariner, then help locating the correct records for his parents. Thanks.

there's another baptism in Lostwithiel to a couple of the same name
29 Sept 1839 Samuel Holman, son of James & Elizabeth. Occupation of James is noted as turnkey at Bodmin Goal. His birth registered june qtr 1839 Bodmin mother's maiden name Beswetherick.
There are more baptisms to the same couple in Bodmin, the last one being Lucy in 1844. Her birth reg
june qtr 1844 Bodmin vol 9 pg 32 gives mother's maiden name as Beswethearick
Daughter Elizabeth was baptised in 1843 date of birth noted as 15 Sep 1841 and birth reg has mmn as Beswerick.

Parish entry for marriage of James & Elizabeth in case you don't have it

I'm not sure that both parents are dead in 1861.
Burial in Bodmin 11 Nov 1855 Elizabeth Holman 52 residence jail - wife of James, warder, died 7 Nov.
James remarried 28 Oct 1858 to Mary Ann Voss.
parish entry for marriage - signature of James looks to be the same writing as the one in 1826

Age on 1861 census has been transcribed as 36, but looks like 56 on the census page

Still in Bodmin in 1871

He was buried age 92 26 Oct 1896

The fact that they are both parents are supposed to be deceased by 1860 and his father was a mariner means the couple at the Gaol are probably not Richard’s parents.

this looks like part of the family in 1841
Lake Field Cottage, St Mary Magdalene, Launceston HO107/1841 folio 18 pg 29
John Holman 70 farmer
Elizabeth 65
Richard 14
Elizabeth 13
John 11
Richard 10
Sarah Uglow 25 not born in county
Elizabeth Uglow 3 months
Fanny White 4
all except Sarah Uglow born in county

Elizabeth Uglow baptised 25 March 1841 at Launceston daughter of Richard, baker, and Sarah of Lake Cottage.
In 1851 she is living with her Holman grandparents in Bodmin

John is a Chelsea pensioner. He was buried in the churchyard at Bodmin aged 89 13 Sept 1858, Sergeant RCM.
Likely baptism for Sarah at Portsea, Hants 12 Sept 1813 daughter of John Holman, Sergeant in the Royal Cornwall Militia, & Elizabeth of Portsea Barracks.
When James Holman remarried in October 1858, his father is noted as John, sergeant in the RCM.
James Pendennis Holman was baptised at Falmouth 8 July 1804 son of John & Elizabeth.

Sarah Uglow is living with her Uglow in laws in Plymouth in 1851

Perhaps it was easier to ask Sarah about his date of birth as she was nearer. Or he fell out with his father after his remarriage. It looks like the same family to me.
