Medal identification help needed

Hi,
Is anybody able to tell me what this medal is?

This is Captain Thomas Brodigan (Aberystwyth 1882-1966), he was my great Uncle. The story I was told was that he was awarded this medal for being the first merchant ship to land at Normandy during the D-Day landings.

Now this is either not true, not documented or I don't know where to look!
If anyone could dig up any info that would be amazing!

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Perhaps local archives might have more info about why he had the medal
